隠された自然

この都市は、一部が海から埋め立てられた土地の上に建設されている。波に洗われた岩にしがみついている貝の殻のように、人工の建造物があらゆる利用可能な空間を埋め尽くす。これらは何百万もの人々の生活の場なのだ。建物は、それ以前に存在したあらゆるものの隙間やその上、下に発生する。
目に見える自然は、文献や芸術、伝統から学んだ、理想化された形に作り変えられている。植物は色と形に基づいて選択され、木は剪定され、青い服を着た庭師がAの形のはしごに乗って成長を操作する。
一見したところ人々も、限られた空間の中で調和して暮らし働くために、望ましい形に嵌め込まれている。礼儀正しく、ストイック、仮面をかぶった顔、静かな電車の中で目を閉じて。
物事の表面を見て、その層の下に何があるのか​​を推測してみる。過去の遺物、感情の浮き沈み、物理的な、あるいは心理的な環境の下に、その間や内部に満ちる隠れた自然。

Hidden Nature

The city is built on land in-part reclaimed from the sea. Man-made structures fill every available space, like mussel shells clinging to wave-washed rocks. These are the habitat of millions of people. Buildings grow between, above and below everything that existed before.
Visible nature takes idealized form, learned from books, from art, family and tradition. Plants are selected for colour and shape, trees pruned and cut, trained in their growth by gardeners dressed in blue on A-frame ladders.
The people too are perhaps shaped to desired form, to live and work in apparent harmony in a confined space; polite, stoic, a masked face, eyes closed on a silent train.
Look at the surface of things and guess what lies beneath the layers; relics of the past, emotional ups and downs, hidden nature teeming beneath, between, within the physical and psychological environment.
